I might do something incredibly old-fashioned and write up a DVD commentary-type thing for this, because I had so much fun playing with a Vicky who's an art thief and a John who investigates her as opposed to vice versa.

The cover art for the Recorded Books audiobook of Street of the Five Moons isn't the greatest, but it has its charms and it grew on me while I was doing canon review, so I added it to my icons. There's not much to choose from when it comes to cover art that attempts to depict them! Dishonorable mentions go to this Dutch edition where they both have dark hair for some reason, and the Recorded Books audiobook of Trojan Gold where they appear to have accidentally published an unfinished sketch and even if there was meant to be a final version, it looks like it was shaping up to be bad. The American hardcover of Silhouette in Scarlet is my favorite, but the composition isn't suitable for iconning, unfortunately. The Recorded Books audiobook of Night Train to Memphis is mediocre but at least it's finished.

I've never really been able to get into hockey because they won't put a team in my city, and I'm like, well, fuck you, too, buddy! We actually did have one, briefly, and they ended up moving it to New Jersey, which is almost as insulting as the time they took our basketball team and moved it to Sacramento, but I digress. I don't read a lot of hockey RPF because I don't follow the sport, but I was introduced to the trope of the winner's room, where a player from the winning team gets to fuck a player from the losing team after the game, and to me this is just the perfect plot device for putting some guys into situations that simply could not exist without institutionalized sex rituals.

The regular season Bills game against the Chiefs—the one that led to the infamous "Mahomes 'meltdown'"—was already top of mind as the draft approaches because the Chiefs need to keep improving the receiver room this offseason so things like that don't happen again, and Rashee Rice is not currently helping! The angst is delicious, though, and since we ended up winning the game that actually mattered against the Bills again this year, it was easier for me to enjoy wallowing in it. Which is what I ended up doing, virtually against my will, because I started writing this and then I couldn't stop writing this:

I've always thought that Dean is by far the most interesting potential love interest for Emily—yes, even at his absolute nadir, he's just a much more compelling character to me. I keep wanting it to magically work out somehow every time I reread. Sadly, it never happens on its own, so I had to actually sit down and write it, making a few little tweaks here and there so it could be possible for things to end differently.

Oddly, I'd never really remarked on the significance of the allusion to Jane Eyre that I used for the title before this reread, even though I know I'd already read it before I read the Emily books and it's always been a favorite of mine. If Dean is going to compare himself to Mr. Rochester, that is a comparison that is extremely favorable to him, honestly!

You may have heard of the Ea-Nasir tablet, which went a bit viral on reddit, tumblr, etc, a while back. It's instantly relatable: the ur-customer service complaint, if you will.

At one point while I was working on this story I joked that I was living the classic stress dream wherein you realize that you have a final research paper due in a class that you have never attended. That was basically how I ended up approaching it—as I was looking up stuff about the world of Ea-Nasir, I kept coming across great stuff that I wanted to work into my story somehow, which in turn led me to look up other things, and so on. Pretty early on I settled on doing a 5 Things fic, with five different scribes and five different texts, with Ea-Nasir's direct response to Nanni's tablet at the center, and at the last minute I went through and annotated a bunch of things for the edification and enjoyment of my readers.

Incidentally, coercedbynutmeg, the entrepôt where Ea-Nasir acquired the copper that Nanni wrote him an angry letter about was none other than Bahrain.

(I'd also never written Christmas fic for Yuletide either, but again, it seemed right.)

Also I love it when my Yuletide source is available as an audiobook. Especially when that audiobook is actually just a little over three hours, and you can listen to that audiobook repeatedly when you still haven't quite decided what to write yet. My writing soundtrack was the music from Camelot, as ended up being reflected in the title, because happily ever aftering is an ongoing process.

FIC REVEAL: Five Times Two Hawkeyes Talked About Sex (and the First Time They Did It)

Yay, it's Yuletide reveals time! This year I wrote Hawkeye/Hawkeye (Clint Barton/Kate Bishop) for bendingwind.

This was my first time writing fic in a mainstream Western comics universe, which was exciting and intimidating. If you are a habitual procrastinator who frets about canon details, there is always another title that you could pick up for research purposes. Not that this is entirely bad; I read some entertaining stuff this way!

Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye comic is absolutely one of the most exciting comics being published right now: it's stylish, it's witty, it's action-filled, it's sweet, it's purple. It's very, very purple. Everyone should check it out! (Don't let the above make it sound like getting into it would be a tedious research project; it's actually very self-contained and self-explanatory in a self-aware way. It was only when I started writing that I felt like I had to know all these things.)
