In which there is Prototaxites <3

I might have mentioned my favourite palaeontological mystery a few times so here's a link to a significant new paper on the subject, based on samples from the Rhynie Chert in Scotland:

[Science Advances] 'Prototaxites fossils are structurally and chemically distinct from extinct and extant Fungi.'

And, more relevant to most people reading this post, here's a link to Joe Botting, half of my favourite team nerd* @ Life Through Time, with an explainer vid:

[youtube] 'Life, but not as we know it... the Prototaxites mystery deepens again!'

Enjoy!

P.S. TUUUBES!!1!! ;-)

Good deed / public service reminder

I just met someone to return their partner's phone, which I found in the road on the way home from ice hockey practice around 1am. Phone, case and debit card all scattered and wet from the rain I was grateful to have missed, the phone itself cracked but still intact. I put them in my bike and went on home.

There I dried everything out and set out to see if I could get in touch with the owner. I couldn't get into the phone, couldn't make calls or send messages, could access emergency contact info but it hadn't been populated, could view Gmail notifications which gave me the owners email address. I emailed it (and had the satisfying confirmation of seeing the resulting notification a short while later). I could see someone had been repeatedly calling the phone, and when they did so again I answered and we were in business. The owner was in a car accident, spent the night in A&E, and just got out, poor thing. I've just come back from meeting the partner at the Co-op to hand it over.

The situation reminded me to check my own phone was set up with emergency contacts and medical info in the Emergency section, which can be accessed without unlocking the phone. I also have my email address showing on my lock screen (all my notifications have the content hidden unless the phone is unlocked). Let this be your reminder to consider what you want visible on your own phone if it is lost.

Pilgrimage, private life, mortality

On a theory, I believe, of sustaining me on literature, my parents very unexpectedly presented me with my own copy of Leslie Howard's Trivial Fond Records (ed. Ronald Howard, 1982), which seems to have shipped from the UK as if the international post just worked.

Well, here we are, the 29th of July, 1940. What have we done with all the years since 1918? Armistice night in Piccadilly Circus is so vivid in the memory, it seems like last Wednesday week. What did happen to all those years – and what have we done with them? It seems we are back where we began. Anyway, there it is on the calendar, July 1940, and this war has been on for eleven months. And I am in London speaking these words, and when I am finished talking to you I shall go out of this building, past sandbags and bayonets, into streets of medieval blackness. As I hunt for the two pin-points of light that represent a taxi it will be about two a.m. here, which is nine in the evening your time, and I shan't be able to resist a thought of the dazzling glare which at that moment is lighting the sky above New York's Great White Way. I daresay there isn't an Englishman alive who is more familiar than I with Broadway at nine o'clock on a summer's evening.

Why didn't anybody tell me that She-Ra was going off Netflix in a month?

And not, apparently, legitimately going anywhere?

Guys, you need to tell me these things! Now where am I supposed to pirate this one from? (I mean, uh, legally obtain it - oh, fuck it.)

Lake Lewisia #1360

Even in a generally friendly forest, not all trees are pleased to have visitors, however polite, and he had managed to choose poorly on every possible level when he decided to carve his initials somewhere. The strategically dropped seed pods and small sticks failed to deter him, and even a wind-whipped branch across the backside only made him fumble the pocket knife for a moment. Even cranky trees may have friends of their own, though, and the creature that padded up behind him on silent paws was quite happy to leave some marks of its own in retribution for its arboreal associate.

Lead Paint on Vintage Corelle Dishes - edited after posting

MSN report here, from last year. I just learned this today. If I can stop anyone else from being exposed, it's worth a reblog.

The dishes in question are basically ubiquitous in kitchens I have known and loved, so that's not great.

ETA:
Okay, now I'm just confused. The lead levels are both a) high and b) technically legal, and it may not be leaching in any case due to the processes used. I hate living in an era where I don't know which of the seven million articles titled essentially the same thing are bullshit, and which are trustworthy. I figured MSN might fact-check, but apparently Corelle has never issued a recall per se, just a "Okay, we guess you might as well buy new stuff, because it's true there's lead in the old stuff." This info from this article.

there is no peace worth saving

Around December, my blood pressure started to run higher. It's been controlled for years with a simple steady pill.

A little over a month later and I'm taking three different pills every night and it's not under control despite everything we've tried.

Maybe one of the reasons it won't go down is because the federal government is engaged in domestic terror against Minnesota. Maybe it is that I have seen ICE in action repeatedly outside the gym. Maybe it is that a vibrant neighborhood is now a ghost town and the only people I see on the street are neighbors organized in watches trying to protect each other. Maybe it is the horror stories I've heard from every single person I know here - like my realtor who has to stand guard shifts outside their daycare or the guy who sits next to me at hockey games who lives down the street from where an ICE agent named Jonathan Ross executed a queer poet named Renee Good in the street. Maybe it seeing every day these small, vicious people throw tear gas and brutalize people while trying to instill fear. Maybe it is seeing the federal government refuse to do anything and the courts fail to enforce any law. Maybe it seeing children thrown to the snow in subzero weather and handcuffed by ICE agents wearing masks and no badges.

Maybe it is knowing the federal government is mobilizing military units for potential deployment into the city where I live.

Maybe it is learning my in-laws have been Trump supporters all this time.

Maybe it is that a friend of mine died early on the 2nd and that I'm so homesick I cry and it's not any safer there but for different reasons.

Maybe it is having years of reading and studying Russian/Soviet history and literature and seeing how unpleasantly similar these events are.

Every day I wonder when they start hunting trans people along with immigrants. We already have concentration camps and they are already places where queer people like me are tortured. Every day I wonder when they will automate and mechanize the process of death.

Every day I wonder if I am doing something for the last time.

Every day I wonder what it will take to stop this, and whether we're capable of it. Every day I wonder if there is a single person in my family who would do a goddamn thing to protect me.

Every day I am more unforgiving of the people who support this, the people who voted for it and the people who don't care enough to do anything.

Catching up on Snowflake backlog

There is no Friday open thread this week, because the [community profile] snowflake_challenge backlog was stressing me out so much that I needed devote a whole post to catching up with it. That said, if you want to use any of the challenges as a prompt, and respond in some way to it in the comments (either by linking to your own [community profile] snowflake_challenge post, or by answering it fresh), do feel free to treat it as a Friday open thread.

General Strike!

I tried to embed the list of businesses shutting down, but here is a link: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1556336315616701

There are so many more... yes, this is adided by the fact that we have -15 F /-26 C air temperatures out there(does not include windchill), but this city is shutting down in solidarity with the anti-ICE movement in Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Y'all, general strikes like this normally do NOT work in the United States, they just don't.

Except here.

And the best part? If a business needs to stay open for reasons no one is shaming them, as the statement from the Minneapolis City Council noted it's understood that some businesses are supporting the movement in other ways (including continuing to employ vulnerable people.)

I am about to head out to our local mosque with some neighbors who want to be introduced to the local protectors, but my day yesterday was much the same as the day before. I spent about an hour and a half loading groceries and diapers into cars that are then taking them to our immigrant, refugee, and other folks in need so that they can continue to stay inside and stay safe.

Mason's partner arrived just as the protest was starting at the Minneapolis International Airport where we are demanding that airlines stop collaborating with murderers and kidnappers. I'd gotten the call to go out there, but I have chosen to leave that fight to others. Pictures of the event underscore my choice. There are hundreds of people marching in this weather!

Cheese Quest

Today I wanted to stay home from work, so I did. To celebrate myself, I made my favorite vegetarian tortilla soup and ate it with Wisconsin Organic Fontina that I got at HEB (before people panicking over the weather cleared the shelves).

It’s pretty good. It is extremely smooth and mild when you first bite into it, but then you find that it’s a bit crumbly and has a slightly sharp flavor. I actually really liked it. I had it with Hatch green chili pita chips and spicy pumpkin tortilla soup and it was a good combo.

Snowflake Challenge 2026: Prompt 12

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #12: Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life.

If you've ever stopped by to talk to me about rarepairs or favorite characters or niche AUs, here or on Discord or Tumblr or in the AO3 comments, thank you! You're the reason I've written as much as I have. (I'd still write for those rarepairs/rare characters/AUs, but knowing I'm writing for someone makes it that much more fun.)

If you followed me over here to Dreamwidth because I would not stop talking about it everywhere else, welcome :D I'm really glad you're here and gave it a shot. And if you've been on Dreamwidth way longer than I have, thank you for being here! It's my favorite place on the internet, and I'm enjoying it so much.

And if you write fic, or meta, or make art or moodboards or memes or anything else fandom-adjacent, you're the reason I got into fandom in the first place, so thank you! I've had a great time here and I'm looking forward to sticking around for a long time. I hope you do too. <3
