mayhap: Mike and Psmith walking and chatting (Mike/Psmith)
What I've been reading

I read Tales of Wrykyn and Elsewhere, a collection of P. G. Wodehouse's early school stories, including appearances previously unknown to me of Wrykyn's most famous former student, one Mike Jackson. Delightful as always.

What I'm reading now

I started this biography of Thomas Becket and it's really interesting so far.

An Ass's Headgear (1335 words) by mayhap
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Inspector Alleyn Mysteries - Ngaio Marsh
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Roderick Alleyn
Additional Tags: Stealth Crossover, Humor, Backstory
Summary:

Police Constable Alleyn runs into difficulties on Boat Race Night.

This was my main assignment! It may be the least stealthy crossover with the Stealth Crossover tag, but I really enjoyed writing it and I'm so glad that people enjoyed reading it.

The Artist's Model (2475 words) by mayhap
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jack and Jill - Louisa May Alcott
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Underage
Relationships: Jack Minot/Ralph Evans
Characters: Jack Minot, Ralph Evans
Additional Tags: Hand Jobs, Frottage, Yuleporn, Yuletide Treat, Age Difference
Summary:

Jack is always eager to lend a friend a hand any way he can.

I also wrote a treat, because I could not resist the siren song of debauching extremely wholesome children's literature! Jack and Jill is more of a deep cut from Louisa May Alcott's œuvre, but I loved it when I was a kid and I thought it held up well on reread, too.

Also I can now thank [archiveofourown.org profile] mattador by name for writing for me!

What I've been reading

Only two books. And technically both of those books are bound into a single volume, along with another book, which I have not yet read. A flight that's only an hour each way doesn't leave a lot of reading time, and otherwise I've been busy since last Wednesday!

I reread The Inimitable Jeeves and Very Good, Jeeves!, which I did not recall based on titles alone are linked story collections rather than novels. That was actually perfect though, since I was reading in airports and on planes and constantly being interrupted.

I also had two people strike up conversations with me while I was carrying it with me, although neither of them were themselves Wodehouse fans. One said her mother-in-law had been a fan and she thought they were mysteries, and the other asked me if my book was good because I seemed to be enjoying myself and she was reading The Maze Runner and not so much.

Probably my last published fiction of the year, with Yuletide opening swift approaching!

What I've been reading

I read The Luck Stone, which was a school story that P. G. Wodehouse wrote to an editorial request for something more "blood-and-thunder" than his regular school stories. Although it's mentioned in the letters collected in Performing Flea, because Wodehouse wrote to his school friend William Townend for plot help, it was not republished before this 2006 edition, probably because it is a bit terrible at being a "blood-and-thunder" story, although it is still pretty amusing at being a Wodehouse school story.

I read The Raven Boys, The Dream Thieves, and Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I knew a lot of people were really excited about these books and it took me a little while to get into the first one, but by the end I was pretty thoroughly sucked in. They're pretty profligate with POVs, which I sometimes found excessively choppy, but on the other hand I think they do a really nice job fleshing out the friendships among the main characters because of how they show all of them reacting to and thinking about each other. Only now I really want the next book, and the last one just came out.

Taking a break from NaNoWriMo—1,700 words and counting! (I really need to try to get ahead now, because there's going to be all kinds of craziness later in the month.)

Night-time Experiences (1787 words) by Magistra
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ecce Romani
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Davus, Eucleides
Characters: Davus - Character, Eucleides - Character
Additional Tags: Slash, Latin, Textbook, Ancient Rome
Summary:

Davus and Eucleides, newly-bought slaves of the wealthy Cornelii Family, learn about how Roman slaves sustain intimate relationships. Oneshot, slash.

I never actually used Ecce Romani in Latin class, as my Latin teacher adopted it the year after I graduated—back in my day, we used Jenney's First Year Latin and we liked it. Sam took Latin II with Ecce Romani, though, and remembered the characters from it, so I looked to see if there was any fic like I already knew there was for Cambridge Latin. And there is! But Cambridge Latin fandom is still winning, because it has like eight posted stories whereas Ecce Romani has two.
