Nupital musings
One of my friends from high school is planning her wedding for this summer, which she envisions as very traditional, yet low-key. I, on the other hand, produced the following outlines for my own wedding based on the most casual perusal of some "history of weddings" websites, from which I took anything which sounded pleasant:
The hypothetical groom and I will find a suitable tavern and reserve it for our use. On the happy occasion, we will gather all our friends and whatnot have them in for a drink. The groom and I, wearing something reasonably presentable and bedecked with wreaths and garlands, will stand up in front of them all, drink from the same cup, exchange rings (perhaps claddagh rings, unless we have any other ideas) and pieces of fruit, and say something quite simple, along the lines of "Will you marry me?" "I will."
Then we will all go on drinking and enjoying ourselves until we are ready to go home. If I happen to have a soprano, a baritone, and an oboist, I will get them to perform the aria duet "Mein Freund ist mein!" from Bach's cantata 140 for me, but if not, no worries. We'll have enjoyable music of one kind or another.
The whole thing sounds like great fun to me. Too bad I'ven't a groom ...
