Did anyone else read The Ordinary Princess by M.M. Kaye? That was one of the obscure gems of my childhood. I've always loved stories that subvert your expectations, and it was such a sweet, funny send-up of the fairytale princess.

I checked out the library's copy to reread and scan to make icons (see also this one). What I really need to do is dig out the two stories I wrote in the same genre not so long after and post you for them all.

I loved that book! Have you ever read the short story "Petronella" by Jay Williams? It's most recently been in print in the Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales, edited by Alison Lurie. It does some similar undercutting; the story starts when Petronella goes on a quest just like her two older brothers, because being a princess shouldn't stop her from going on a quest.
