One of the best-written ones!

I like to listen to podcasts while I'm doing other things, especially boring, mostly-mindless things like cleaning or cooking. I was an early adopter of the technology, back when I had to physically sync the podcasts onto my iPod (3rd generation) to carry them around with me. Long before that, I used to listen to our collection of Adventures in Odyssey cassettes while I was playing with Legos, and then I sometimes listened to audiobooks on cassette that I checked out of the library while I was getting ready for school in the morning. Now that we're in a crazy podcast boom, I'm subscribed to a bunch of podcasts about a wide variety of subjects: topical comedy, sports, weird trivia, rereading children's books from the 80s and 90s, even a soupçon of true crime.

As an extremely non-notable person, one thing I do not expect a podcast I put on to be about is…me. Not just, like, hashtag relatable content, but about my actual individual self. However, there is a podcast called The Worst of All Possible Worlds that devotes a significant subset of its episodes to an ongoing series analyzing and snarking episodes of the aforementioned Focus on the Family children's radio drama, Adventures in Odyssey, a subject which is relevant to my interests. In their latest episode, just in time for Christmas, they covered the three-part miniseries Back to Bethlehem, which features the voice talents of the late great Earl Boen as a Roman centurion opposite Nathan Carlson as a Jewish Zealot. In the main continuity of the series, they voiced Dr. Regis Blackgaard and Richard Maxwell, respectively, and this is where I come in.

You see, I happen to have written explicit noncon Richard Maxwell/Regis Blackgaard fic as a Yuletide treat a few years back, and that fic certainly seems to have made an impression:

As soon as I realized, oh, he's actually going to describe my fic now—and, not gonna lie, it was when the clause began with 'one of the best-written ones'—I was absolutely flabbergasted. But in a fun way! A little later in the episode they grapple a bit with what about the writing and the performance makes Richard Maxwell such a disproportionately popular character, especially with horny girls on tumblr, and I think it's really interesting to hear some outsiders' perspectives on whole phenomenon, as well as my particular instance of it.

My main problem is that my Richard Maxwell feels are back full force again. It's like the varicella zoster virus, you get infected with it in childhood and then it lies dormant in your body and when it gets reactivated in adulthood, it's much more severe, and maybe they have a vaccine for it now, I don't know. I should really try to write some more fic, because I have a wide range of Richard Maxwell feels and only managed to cover a sliver of them in that one story, but finishing things is hard.

Yuletide reveals

I wrote two things for Yuletide and they're definitely very different from each other! Both pretty on-brand for me, though, in their own way.

What do you mean, Dogs Lost in a Maze that is Also in Egypt isn't a real movie? It has a Rotten Tomatoes page! This is the novelization that an ancient Egyptian might have written if he had a strange and anachronistic mandate to include prominent product placement.

Summary:

With Dr. Regis Blackgaard forced to his knees at gunpoint, Richard Maxwell takes his revenge. AU of Waylaid in the Windy City.

Adventures in Odyssey is a long-running radio drama produced by Focus on the Family which is supposed to teach your children important lessons, but I learned all the wrong lessons from it. Like that revenge is actually awesome and the only thing that would make it better would be getting the guy who'd deliver the lecture about how revenge is bad out of the room so that things can get really filthy. Hence this fic.
