Spam spam spam mobiles and spam

These Asurion phone insuring people have been sending my mom replacement phones that do not work, and sometimes have other people's phone numbers in them for added insult. (One of them proclaimed "I love Brianne.")

Finally, having displeased my mother greatly, and quite possibly run out of ancient phones of this ancient model (which was incidentally the same as the one that burst into flame in a girl's pocket in Ontario), they have decided to pacify her with a nice shiny new one that is quite a few times cooler than mine or that of my brother, and which she will no doubt be utterly unable to figure out how to use any time in the near future.

Is this fair? Is this just? Perhaps I should put my phone through the wash, since this is clearly what all the cool people are doing nowadays.

:)

I had a similar experience with a phone replacement here in Ottawa. Alas, no insurance. So when my shoddily designed Motorola v120 suffered the inevitable "antenna snap off" my provider suggested the trade-in method. That's where my phone gets sent off for repair, but I walk out of the store right there and then with a replacement... basically I get someone else's old phone back rather than mine. And yup, no attempt made to clear their programming. So all their old call logs, phone book entries, saved text messages were mine all mine. A dubious pleasure to be sure, as I didn't erase any of my data before giving up my old phone....

Sigh... if only I'd had your advice before I did this it would have saved me a lot of trouble... I did lose several numbers when I gave up the phone without thinking.

Don't you folks use a palm pilot or a computer or something, where all the data is majickally transferred to somewhere else before you give up the phone? AFter all, even I have an address\phone book.
As for the cell phone, I'm holding out until they make a model that actually works. And a network that actually works. And until Cingular and AT&T wireless merge. And they stop fucking up about half of their customer's monthly phone bills.

Ooh, my husbands palm pilot apparently can connect to a cell phone. It also connects to a computer. Voila. Mr Palm is your intermediary.
