Barbara Mertz/Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels/one of my single favorite people in the world has died.

I can't even say how sad this makes me. Right this minute I'm house-sitting for my junior high best friend's mom, who gave me copies of The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog and Murder Must Advertise for my twelfth birthday and basically set the agenda for who I was going to read and what I was going to be going forward.

I don't even know who the heck that is. You may disown me now. Or, you might recommend the best title of hers to read, so I can add it to the interminable list. I haven't read any fiction (unless you count bedtime stories or memoirs) since January.

Actually, both of her popular nonfiction books about ancient Egypt are really fun, and they were both revised fairly recently for maximum accuracy: Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs and Red Land, Black Land. Pair your research with Sesame Street: Don't Eat the Pictures and turn it into a homeschooling unit, or something. Sadly, you're on the wrong coast to cap it off with a trip to the Temple of Dendur.

I thought of you when I heard this last night. I was sad, of course, but it seems she passed away as she wanted, peacefully at home in her sleep, so at least there's that. But still: the world is immeasurably poorer without her. :(
