Barbara Mertz/Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels/one of my single favorite people in the world has died.

I can't even say how sad this makes me. Right this minute I'm house-sitting for my junior high best friend's mom, who gave me copies of The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog and Murder Must Advertise for my twelfth birthday and basically set the agenda for who I was going to read and what I was going to be going forward.

I needed some heavy-duty relaxing this weekend, so I took a bath with my third-best copy of Trojan Gold. (What, you don't hoard multiple copies of your favorite books? I mean, you can't take your only copy of your favorite book into the bath!)

This, naturally enough, prompted me to look for more recordings of BWV 140, which led to the happy discovery of John Eliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. Their version of Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme is so lovely that I just had to share.

Also, because I share Vicky's taste in theologically-deficient misprisions of the text and because I am secretly still twelve, I really love the other aria in the cantata, where the soprano (the soul) sings "Wenn kömmst du?" and the bass (Jesus) sings "Ich komme!" ;)

I got a lovely story and a charming Yuletide treat this year!

Herr Doktor SilberneKlinge und Der Herr der Ring -- Schmidt's delightful romp through fandom! The voice is perfect, and so are all the little fandom details, not that I would expect anything less from a Yuletide writer! (Schmidt blows off Vicky and John for something called a 'ficathon', hee!) Schmidt is sorely tried by someone who is wrong on the internet about the appeal of Gandalf fic, but reinforcements from an unexpected quarter make everything better.

Encounter with St. George -- A perfect little Hilary/St. George drabble!

Now, as for the rest of the archive, I'm only in the Ds and I've already opened a zillion tabs for future reading. /o\

Somebody stole my copy of The Laughter of Dead Kings off my porch while I was out of town for my grandfather's funeral. Who does that? I mean, John would have at least had the decency to replace it with an identical copy such that I would never have been able to tell the difference.

Couldn't they at least have returned the opened Amazon box when it proved to have a book in it instead of a couple of DVD box sets or something? Is that so much to ask from the modern postal thief?

There's a new Vicky Bliss book coming out in August! I can't believe that I had to learn such earth-shattering news from one of those Amazon.com emails suggesting books that I might perhaps be interested in. O series of my heart, pairing of my soul!

I have also watched the new X-Files trailer, and, well. Scully is so very, very pretty. I'd see the movie for her hair alone.
