My fandom contains a not terribly sympathetic character with a dead rabbit, but I do love my rabbit, who roams the house and snuggles into my arm and behaves more intelligently than something with such a tiny head ought to behave. She's eight years old and ought to live to be even twice that if she doesn't, say, die during exploratory surgery on Wednesday, or get put to sleep afterwards.
All there seems to be left to do is lie down next to her and rub her head, which always mesmerizes her and hopefully distracts her from her troubles. After a while she goes off and hides.
