Finally got my hands on the raw Prince of Tennis live action movie yesterday! I watched it last night with Stan, who has consumed no Prince of Tennis in any format save a handful of episodes from the Hyotei arc. I tried to translate and/or explain stuff; Stan provided vodka. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine which proved more illuminating.

Basically, there were extremely pretty boys playing tennis in luscious golden sunlight, and I approved.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt somewhat on how compressed and confusing the storyline was, because possibly it was less confusing to people who understood more of the actual words, which might have explained some things. Maybe.

I'm not sure whose brilliant idea it was to replace Sakuno's role with a girl who is even less empowered than Sakuno at her most embarrassing and unnecessary, but they deserve some kind of medal for perversity. Also, fountain of youth!Ryuzaki-sensei was really really hot, but I wished she had retained more of her awesomeness, not to mention her ability to intimidate Nanjiroh.

Most of Seigaku was pretty predictably shortchanged, but it was a lovely hymn to TezuRyo. (Stan likes to interject comments about the homoeroticism of various scenes. I don't think he's used to getting quite such an ... enthusiastic ... response.)

To summarize, the Prince of Tennis movie is a valuable tool for converting people who like pretty boys to the Tenipuri cause.
