mayhap: four magpies in a tree from a medieval manuscript (magpie tree)
What I've been reading

I read The Idylls of the Queen, an Arthurian novel that I put in an interlibrary loan request for because I heard that it features Sir Kay prominently and I love that jerkass. It draws heavily from Malory, but not in the way The Once and Future King does; it's very explicitly set in the exact same universe. I really dig the commitment to the premise, even when it results in vast quantities of exposition necessary to set the stage for the murder mystery, which is also drawn directly from Malory. Of course, it helps that Kay is the one delivering this exposition as well as solving the mystery, since, as aforementioned, I am predisposed to love him. He has this great buddy cop/road trip thing going on with Mordred, and it's delightfully spiky and I totally ship it. I'm not averse to a more sympathetic take on Mordred, personally, but for those who feel otherwise this is definitely not the book for you, because Mordred has a very strong woobie streak.

I read Expurgating the Classics: Editing Out in Greek and Latin, another interlibrary loan, this time based on a tumblr post. It is exactly the sort of thing I enjoy reading about.
