I finally put my finger on what I thought was weird about the final episode of True Detective and why I was strangely fond of it. It's like when you're writing shippy futurefic for an open canon with a strong central mystery arc, and you pretty much have to engage with the resolution of that arc for the fic you have in mind, but you handwave a lot of it so you can get to the shippy bits. And man, the shippy bits were great—hospital bird flips and gift-wrapped cigarettes have never been so romantic.
