PSA: The OED's WOTD is on PCP

mayhapClicking around on the internet, as I am wont to do, I happened to come across the Oxford English Dictionary's Word of the Day email. I happen to be rather fond of words, although rather less fond of word of the day emails, but it was the OED after all, so I thought, why not give it a try and see how you like it?
I'm here to tell you why not--because the thing is bloody possessed.

I mean, I really don't think it was necessary to welcome me to the list 42 times. Furthermore, while it is perfectly acceptable to put in a brief plug for your products in your free email list, I believe this should be done once. Not twice. Ironically, they're urging me to "learn to express yourself more accurately and in more interesting and varied ways", but they're just driving me to express myself more forcefully with ALL CAPS and four-letter words.
So, after, as I say, the third such email, I decided that not only was the honeymoon over, but we had apparently progressed directly to throwing broken bottles at each other, and I unsubscribed from the list, and got confirmation of such.
I then received my fourth identical email.
I tried to unsubscribe from it for good measure.
I was informed that I could not unsubscribe as I was not actually subscribed in the first place.
If I receive a fifth email, I assure you, there will be edits. Probably containing more CAPS and four-letter words.
I'm here to tell you why not--because the thing is bloody possessed.

I mean, I really don't think it was necessary to welcome me to the list 42 times. Furthermore, while it is perfectly acceptable to put in a brief plug for your products in your free email list, I believe this should be done once. Not twice. And holy Zarquon singing fish, NOT 42 TIMES. What the fuck? Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK?
Ironically, they're urging me to "learn to express yourself more accurately and in more interesting and varied ways", but they're just driving me to express myself more forcefully with ALL CAPS and four-letter words.
So, after, as I say, the third such email, I decided that not only was the honeymoon over, but we had apparently progressed directly to throwing broken bottles at each other, and I unsubscribed from the list, and got confirmation of such.
I then received my fourth identical email.
I tried to unsubscribe from it for good measure.
I was informed that I could not unsubscribe as I was not actually subscribed in the first place.
If I receive a fifth email, I assure you, there will be edits. Probably containing more CAPS and four-letter words.

And by then, of course, I wasn't going to be appeased unless it told me where to find the Holy Grail and how to make money and lose weight while I sleep. As opposed to the OED on-line (which I looked into when I was bigger into heraldry) which costs like $500 US a year or some such. *shudder*
